Back when I was a kid, we go to Tarlac every summer and Christmas to spend a few days with our grandparents. Those days were gone. A few years ago, my grandmother and the whole family moved near our house from the military camp in Tarlac. Apparently, the land was sold and will be developed as a golf course.
I remember my lola made the best lomi and sampelot (ginataang bilo-bilo). She and my Tita Ester also make a bunch of palitaw for merienda on random days for me and my cousins. We're about 18 kids running around the house on summers. Imagine how noisy that is, and how hungry we were after playing under the sun. My grandmother passed away five years ago. I still miss her until today.
Yesterday, I thought of making palitaw at home for Jeff and my in-laws. We had some leftover glutinous rice flour from the ginataang bilo-bilo last week, so I thought of using that.

The last few weeks have been crazy for me. Being pregnant is crazy, but I love it! Haha! I started having weird cravings like paksiw at 3AM, siopao, and donuts. Good thing Jeff is always to the rescue and get me anything that I want, on the spot!
The other day, I craved for the fishballs that are being sold in the market. Jeff didn't allow me to eat that, so the solution was to buy fishballs in the supermarket and make our own sauce.

I was browsing Facebook this morning and came across an easy and interesting recipe. If you can't think of anything to cook for tonight's Media Noche, here's a suggestion from me. ;)
Kare-kare is Jeff's favorite food. It's been my problem since we became a couple because I don't know how to cook it. One morning, I was out buying something and I had a light bulb moment -- I will cook kare-kare today. I called my mom and asked her the recipe. Again, she doesn't cook well, she's just good with all the pachams. Hehe. We have a store in Antipolo Public Market so she kinda asks her suki who has carenderias. I used pork chops the first time I cooked it, but unfortunately, I didn't have pictures. This is my second try in cooking kare-kare and I tried a healthier version. Here's my fish kare-kare.
I am a self-confessed probinsyana. And even though I didn't like eating vegetable when I was young, I knew how to cook them (and eventually ate what I cooked) by the help of my mom. She's not really a good cook, but we love her pacham recipes. Pacham as in pachambachamba lang haha.
Today, I cooked one of the recipes I learned from her -- ginisang mais. I thought it was a Kapampangan dish, but I recently realized that it is a proud Tagalog dish. Jeff loves this so when he went for a tripping the other day in Nuvali and Tagaytay, he made sure he'll grab some white corn along the way.
I have no work today. I just slept 'til 9:30AM, tried to revive my 500GB portable drive, and finally decided to go to the waxing salon for my underarm. Oh, the life of a bum.
On my way back to the house, I thought of making Jeff something special. So I dropped by the supermarket and went to the cold cuts area. I grabbed a 500 gram pack of bacon and went straight to the cashier. Also, I had to buy my favorite Quickly drink. Just because.
I went around to find plastic flowers but the woman in the flower shop won't sell me hers because she said it is for display. I hopped from one supermarket to another, but it was too hot so I just decided to stop. But then I thought, I am already sweaty so what the heck? I walked from Puregold in Presidents Avenue to the school supplies shop near our village. I grabbed some sticks, green cartolina, and colored masking tape.
I am making Jeff a bacon rose bouquet. How? Watch me.
It was a holiday so Jeff and I woke up around 8AM. The first thing I asked him was, 'Anong gusto mong ulam?' He said we should check the fridge and cook whatever.
Jeff's family is a big vegetable eater, so it wasn't a surprise to find a full set of pinakbet ingredients. Except for the stringbeans or sitaw. I asked him to go to the market to buy sitaw, camote fruit, and tomato sauce while I prepare the other ingredients. It is my first time to cook pinakbet but I assumed it was just easy because my mom told me that you just saute everything.
So here's my family's recipe of pinakbet with a twist.
